Towel Spinning

Postby Gazreial on Fri Jul 11, 2008 8:30 am

Here's one about which I'd like to hear from others.

I first saw this in High School on a TV show about some fancy circus. Four or five Asian women where spinning what looked like rugs (rectangular in shape) while doing acrobatic balancing acts. I taught myself to do it when I worked at Dominos as a teenager. In the roughly a decades worth of time I've been able to do this unique form of juggling I have met no one else who could do it nor have I managed to teach anyone to do it. I have taught a few people how to do the basic 3 ball cascade, so I can only conclude that towel spinning must be harder. With the proper towel, I can keep a spin going for as long as my muscles will hold my arm up. I have yet to meet anyone else who can keep a towel spinning for more than 10 seconds.

Can anyone out there towel spin?

hahah thats actually pretty funny miles

I cant exactly spin towels but have tried to on MANY occasions. I always did it just for the hell of it and I never knew that it was actually a practiced art.

I can spin books on my finger and can contact juggle fairly well but i Just cant seem to get the towel down pat. Any tips?
If it was it would be and if it is it might be, But as it isn't it aint. Thats logic!

 Actually, in the 80s the Gay Dance Clubs had TONS of guys doing the Towels & T-Shirt Spinning as well as Oriental Fan Juggling as part of their dance routines. I know I used to get on the floor with my Dancing Cane or Zombie from time to time.

WOW. Almost 2 years and still no one has given a difinitive YES. This art must truly be as rare as I think it is.

Craig, thats very clever of you. I can only imagine your responses were twice what you received when you typicaly performed these effects. Good thinking on your part.

Adrian, if you're still listening yes I do have some tips. Start with a thick, square towel (roughly 12" on a side) and dampen it to make it heavier. You don't want your finger to be in the center of the towel but slightly off center. Beyond that I can only say practice. You might find that as you spin, the centipital force causes the towel to work its way outward from your finger, but as you practice you will learn to use the other fingers to bring it back to position.

I.. I can't, Sad to say!

You must worked real hard to do this kind of stunt.
I guess,it will only be 1 out of 20 people can do it.. It would be a nice Skill..

I wish I could do it..

Not really. When I found myself at Dominos with nothing to do I would play with my towel (which I used for genral clean up). Even practicing so casually it wasn't very long before I got the hang of it. The three ball cascade was much more difficult to learn.

You don't really mean that... If you wanted to be able to do this then you would be able. I'm not special in anyway. If you just try enough you can spin a towel just as well if not beter than I can. All you have to do is try.
